The Search for the Perfect Mascara

Mar 31, 2010 under Fun Stuff | 1 comment

Most girls consider mascara an integral piece in their makeup bag. It can do so much – on a basic level it lengthens and defines our lashes but it also does that work to make us feel more sexy, beautiful and confident.
When I was younger I often went for the cheapest brand of mascara I could find. This often consisted of mascaras that came free with magazines (until I realized there’s a reason they were free!) or mascaras from makeup boxes I had been given as a gift. The most extravagant mascara I used to own was usually the store brand offering from the local pharmacy.
Back in those days I was fine with what I had. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t too bothered about the quality – it seemed to be more about quantity and making my eyes look as dark as possible. But there comes a day when every girl starts to be able to afford the make-up she really wants, yet finding out what that might be is more of a challenge.
Often, it’s easy to go for the most expensive and well-packaged mascara that just must be able to work miracles for the price they’re charging. Not the case! Of course, price can mean a lot when it comes to looking for makeup, but it isn’t everything. Often brands will bump up the price just because they can put a famous name to the product, but speaking from personal experience this does not always work out for the shopper.
The perfect mascara will depend on your needs – you might want huge eyelashes; at other times you might want something more subtle; you may also be looking for a waterproof mascara for the holidays. It is important to bear all of these factors in mind during your search, and to know that it is unlikely you will find one magic brush to match all of these needs.
For an everyday mascara to create a tidy, yet subtle, effect, I choose Max Factor Masterpiece mascara. It brings perfect definition every time and in truth I was amazed when I first found a mascara with this brush design. I have seen many others since then, but I have stuck to what I know. I also found that Max Factor’s Masterpiece Max was a perfect step-up from their original Masterpiece, to create a thicker look yet still not overdone.
There are, of course, those nights out when I just want my eyes to look as dark and as thick as they possibly can. We all want to make an impact at times, and mascara is a great way to do this. On these occasions I tend to use Benefit’s Bad Gal which does what it says on the tin. It isn’t meant to be nice and subtle – but bold and obvious! As for the waterproof, I have found simple is best – cheap and cheerful classic waterproof mascara from Maybelline was all I needed.
During my search I learned some lessons – most importantly that cost doesn’t equal quality, but also the fact that it takes a while to really find that mascara that is right for you.

Beauty maintenance

Feb 16, 2010 under Fun Stuff | no comment

Eucalyptus-Tea-Tree-SoapBeing beautiful means being disciplined. Maintaining a figure that looks like 15 years younger means high maintenance. Exercise in the morning, a bit of  adult acne treatments when needed, healthy meal  everyday. Though beauty maintenance may require a little bit of budget, the feeling of satisfaction is quite fulfilling.

My 2 kids are all grown up now. One is starting a new career and the other one is starting her very own family. They are both vain and use special soaps everyday for their faces. They’re quite busy person but luckily they always never forget to wash their faces. I wonder where they got that from?

A day with my BFF

Feb 6, 2010 under Fun Stuff | no comment

Few days before i left to visit singapore, my friend asked me to accompany her to the shopping malls around the city because she wanted to buy furnitures. We made a date out of it.hthetre

They’ve recently bought a house and unexpectedly it came along with it is there own theatre room. After buying the table for the kitchen we went back to her house, so I can check it out. It’s not fully furnished but the entertainment was remarkable, it came with a very nice home theater seating. It was so unique. To tell you the truth it’s the first time I’ve been to house that has its own theatre room. The room is dark and lots of life size posters like Godzilla and Titanic.

She gave me a book with a list that she have as I waited in the room while she prepares popcorn. As I sat in the comfortable theater chairs it really feels like watching movies in typical mall theaters.

At the end of the day, she invited me to come back one of these days to have another movie marathon. Of course I said yes because I had a lot of fun today.

Driver who doesn’t know his way

Feb 5, 2010 under Fun Stuff | no comment

It was passed twelve noon when my son arrived at the house and picked me up to drop me off to the airport.  It was ten minutes after when my chauffer/driving instructor Joseph. Well basically his expertise is mostly in teaching and not in being a driver. As he parks the car to the front yard Jamelle (my son) grabbed my luggages and putts them in the compartment.

carAs I gracefully enters the 2007 Vios car, Joseph mentioned that he is not really familiar with the road (oh boy that’s going to be a problem). Being one of the aging classy sophisticated ladies I’m not also familiar with roads. All I know is I’ll pass the biggest mall and from there the airport would be near.

Eventually were on the road, we went to this big mall and from there followed buses going to the airport. My son made some phone calls from his friends that knows the road much but wasn’t really that of a big help.  We took one turn one time when we were following this bus but got caught in the mid hour a traffic jam.

We took a one minute stop at this gasoline station (which basically solved my issues with directions) and the gasoline guys are quite kind enough to point us the exit signs of the road which we were stuck for 15 minutes and pointed us to the correct route going to the airport.

Few minutes later.  Jamelle already recognizes the road going to terminal three as I heard that news I am relieved of the stress of being late. I immediately made some few strokes with the brush and made once again the candle effects of beauty queens. As he drives nearer and nearer to the departure bay.  I’ve checked in the things that I have. Tickets? Checked! Bags? Checked! All set up and ready to go.

As the car stopped I moved fast to the check-in counters and run towards the gates. Yet exhausted from the fast pace I manage to keep the smile in my face. So excited right now. I’ll be visiting my daughter again in Singapore!

Singapore! Here I come

Got myself a gift

Feb 4, 2010 under Fun Stuff | no comment

While I was in Singapore, I saw this nice solitaire diamond earring in a shop. I always wanted one so I thought I would buy myself one. It’s great that the shop accept credit card because I didn’t have cash at that moment.

I bought it and it was tax-free ! I think it was a pretty good deal, it would have cost me three time more if I bought it in Canada.

Throwing a Great Kids Party

Feb 23, 2009 under Fun Stuff | no comment

nullOn the face of it, organizing a children’s party doesn’t seem to be a particularly daunting prospect. You invite the children, buy decorations, other childrens party supplies and food and organize a couple of games, that’s all there is to it!… or is it?

There is a strong need to keep children occupied, happy and having fun. A party with bored, miserable and fed-up children can often be considered an anarchic riot rather than a friendly event. There are a few factors to be considered in the process of organizing a children’s party.

1: KISS!

A massively overused concept and, often an annoyance, the KISS! principle is a poignant idea in regards to your youngster’s party. The principle, for those who don’t know, stands for Keep It Simple Stupid! If you give a very young child the latest in infantile gadgetry chances are the youth will find more enjoyment in the packaging than the content. This principle can be applied when buying children’s party supplies and organizing the event. There is no need to plan party games for every second of the party, you don’t need to hire a petting zoo, your cat or dog will suffice.

2: Incentive Games

Use party games when you feel the children/ mini-guests are starting to get bored, it is remarkable just how much time children can spend entertaining themselves. By doing this you will not have to dream up a myriad of different activities, and, at the end of the day, a group of children running around the garden is more fun than dealing with unsuccessful contestants.

A few party game ideas

3: Decorations

As with all the ideas discussed on this page, keep the decorations simple. Nothing is more fun to a child than pulling down that banner which just so happens to be snagged on your priceless Ming vase. You have to have the obligatory happy birthday balloons on the front gate, children don’t have sat-nav. As for the inside have a couple of “Happy Birthday Banners” on the walls, out of reach to prying hands, of course. And let the plastic party cups, plates, cakes, hats and all the other paraphernalia be your decoration.

4: Timing

Make it mid afternoon and keep it short. You don’t want to have everyone come round at 9am and leave at 7pm. Just a couple of hours will do. This leaves you ample time to prepare in the morning and clean up in the late afternoon. It goes without saying that the longer the party is, the more you will have to prepare, so why cause undue headaches?

5: It will never be perfect

As with most things in life the odds are highly stacked against you and something, usually minor, will go wrong. You may forget the cake or little jimmy may refuse to join in, there is nothing, in preparation, that you can do about this. Just go with the flow and try and make the whole experience as crease free as possible. It is worth having contact details of all parents involved in case of emergency. When sending out invites request an RSVP with contact details.

All in all it is relatively hard to go wrong with a children’s party. The problems that usually arise are trivial and there is no need for panic or dismay.
