How to Eliminate Odors at Home

April 26th, 2012 Mom Posted in Home, The Green Room No Comments »

Every mom dreams of clean, pure air inside her home.  You wouldn’t want your little boy inhaling foul odors as he happily plays with his Duncan metal drifter yoyo in his bedroom, would you?  If you were one of the Incredibles, you’d probably turn the house inside out, and suck all the bad odors from it with ease.  Since that happens only in the movies, you’d do better to try out these tips instead:

Put vinegar in tiny containers, and put them in strategic places around the room.  Vinegar absorbs unpleasant smells.  You can also use charcoal to absorb odors, if you’re not too keen on vinegar.

Dust some baking soda on the carpets and furniture. It’s best to do this at night and then vacuum them off in the morning. Baking soda will do the job of absorbing some of the grease and leave a fresh odor in the room.

You can also mix 1 Tbs. baking soda, a teaspoon of lemon juice and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, and simply spray away when needed.

With these simple, and environment-friendly tips, you’ll be able to effectively shoo away odors from your home.

Why Choose Leather Furniture?

April 20th, 2012 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

Who in his right mind wouldn’t want to sit in the lap of luxury?  Although your home may hardly qualify for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, you can still do something to pimp up your living room, to make it resemble that of royalty’s.  One way to do that is by choosing leather furniture.

Why should you choose leather?  Other than the prestige it projects, it is easy to maintain.  All you need is regular wiping with a damp cloth, and you’re good to go.  If you want added protection, you may use a stain protector.  And if you happen to need to repair leather couch snags, you can always get someone to do that for you.

Durability is another thing you can count on.  Leather is a popular material because of its durability.

Comfort is also something leather furniture boasts of.  Sofas made of leather follow the natural contours of your body, while retaining its shape.  Because it keeps its shape, its beauty lasts.

Leather furniture carries with it a certain air of elegance and style. Care for it as you would a fragile heart, and it will last you a lifetime.

Tips on Cleaning Laminate Floors

April 16th, 2012 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

Wouldn’t it be utter bliss for you to know that your kids can safely roll around on the immaculately clean alloc flooring in your living room?  If your home surroundings were as clean and pure as the love you have for your family, then you wouldn’t worry a tad bit about uninvited germs finding their way into your kids’ bodies.  How do you keep your laminate floors spotless, anyway?

Use a soft brush attachment on the vacuum regularly.  Be sure to sweep or vacuum in the direction the floor is laid, so you can pick up all the dirt between the grooves instead of trapping in the flooring.

When washing, dilute a few quick squirts of mild liquid detergent and half a cup of vinegar in a pail of warm water.  Wring out the mop to keep the water from dripping.  Wipe the floor with the damp mop.

Caring for laminate flooring is much easier than cleaning real wood flooring.  With the above tips, you’ll find it a breeze to maintain the high gloss of your laminate floors.

Things You Need to Make Sure before Moving to Your New House

April 3rd, 2012 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

The key to your new home has finally been handed over to you, and you’re excited to start your new life there. Nevertheless, before you say goodbye to your old home, it’s crucial that you make a list of some of the things you need to take care of prior to your impending move. For instance, ask yourself if you have already arranged new utilities for your new home. You should also ask make sure that you have informed your bank, your mobile phone network provider, cable company, and any other companies who regularly bill you that you’re moving out and will forward a new address to them.

In addition, if you regularly contact a gardener, milk delivery service, a Maid Service Vienna VA, or other third party service, then you might have to cancel their services. Mail redirect is another important thing you need to take care of. As much as possible, try to discontinue utilities and inform tax or local authorities of the move so they can make adjustments to your bill and have these forwarded to your new home.

Finally, make sure that you’ve packed everything and that you haven’t left anything in the rooms. Make sure also that there’s nothing left in, underneath, behind, or on top of any furniture that you might be living behind. Once you’ve taken care of everything, you can move on to your new house peacefully knowing that you didn’t impose unnecessary hurdles on yourself.

The Ins and Outs of “Me Time”

March 27th, 2012 Mom Posted in Home, Motherhood No Comments »

It’s a pretty constant refrain parents, particularly mothers it seems, hear all the time. The importance of obtaining a little time to yourself to just be slightly self-involved for a little bit, to get away from constant vigilance and attention to the video baby monitor. Still, finding — and enjoying — those rare bits of “me time” can be harder than any sane person would normally think.

Of course, everyone would agree that having a strong support system in place that permits more breathing room is invaluable. A loving and supportive partner, involved grandparents, other very close relatives or friends as well as paid babysitters and others — these are all invaluable aids. However, even parents who are blessed with all the emotional and physical support they can manage still find themselves unable to relax under any circumstances. One friend confided to us how, with a lot of effort, she finally got herself some time alone to watch her favorite television show. The only problem was that she was unable to tear her eyes away from the baby monitor. Her husband was on standby, but the thought that her baby could be experiencing some discomfort without her help was just too overwhelming to her.

Now, there are potentially very serious issues that can come in the wake of a new baby. Relationships can be stressed by the new responsibility and postpartum depression is a very real and common issue that needs to be addressed by a medical professional. Assuming these kind of matters are not the problem, the inability to enjoy a little bit of alone time is simply a matter of allowing yourself permission to be — within some pretty limited circumstances — just a little bit less central to your child’s’ world. At some point, all parents are going to have to realize that, as important as they are to their children, they are not their entire universe. It’s partly an issue of being able to trust others, including your parents and partners, to take care of your children and mind the baby monitor. Your child isn’t the only one going through a maturation process.

Watching Movies at Home with the Family

September 19th, 2011 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

Even if your home doesn’t have a home entertainment system worthy of airtime on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, or one of those “celebrity crib” shows, you can still help enhance your family’s home movie viewing experience.

Since most of the movies we have are stored in our computers, it would be much more convenient to simply hook them up to the TV straight away.   To do the job, you’ll need those vga to hdmi cables.  Might sound a little alien to you, so get your hubby to do the hardware shopping.

It would help if you had a TV surround system.  This gives a cinema-like feel to your movie watching.  Otherwise, you can just make do with what you have.  Most TV sets are equipped with built-in cinema settings.  Just fiddle with them and you’ll hit the spot.

Pop the popcorn, get the drinks ready, and sit the family down to an unforgettable movie viewing experience right in your living room.  Sharing a movie with them proves to be a fun bonding moment- and you don’t even have to talk!

School Day Morning Rush: How To Cope

August 1st, 2011 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

Seems like only yesterday when you were preparing graduation announcements from invitationbox.com to send to family and friends.  Now that summer’s gone, it’s time once more to hit the books.  One of the more stressful things about being a mom to school kids is getting them ready for school.  On a normal school day, we almost always find ourselves in a mad morning rush, just trying to run a comb through their hair.  What can we do to make the task easier?

The night before, get their stuff ready.  Put the books they’ll need for the next school day inside your kids’ bags.  Hang the clothes they plan to wear outside the closet, so they won’t have to waste time in choosing their outfit the next morning.  If you drive your kids to school, gas up the previous day, because lines at the gasoline station tend to be long on Monday mornings, for instance.

Rushing about always gives us undue stress.  The key to dealing with it lies in effective preparation.

July 12th, 2011 Mom Posted in Fun Stuff, Home No Comments »

If you’re like most people in the metro nowadays, you probably live in one of those high-rise condominiums. City living has definitely afforded us with more convenient ways of living, in keeping up with the times. Doesn’t it sometimes make you miss those backyard barbecue and pool parties you grew up with?

The good news is you can still enjoy an outdoor barbecue up in the 32nd floor of your condo unit. If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony outside your unit, you can get one of those nifty tabletop electric grills. You can grill your favorite burgers or steaks with ease, and invite your closest friends for an intimate barbecue party. Throw in your favorite drinks and side dishes for a perfect get-together.

How To Relieve Your Husband’s Stress

July 12th, 2011 Mom Posted in Home No Comments »

I love my husband, let nobody tell you differently! That’s why it almost crushes my heart to see him, on most days, heavily weary from a long day’s work. When I see him occasionally staring blankly into space, I sometimes think he has totally lost his bearings.

Working men are, of course, prone to a great deal of stress. They do take their jobs seriously, what with their bosses breathing down their necks the entire time. So how can we, as wives or loving partners, help alleviate some of that stress?

Since we love our man to bits, it should be no herculean task to show him that we care. Simple acts such as fixing him a sumptuous dinner and pouring him a glass of wine as a nightcap can do wonders at relieving him of stress and anxiety. You could give him a quick shoulder rub as he sits on the couch to catch his favorite basketball game.
If you keep doing more stress-reducing deeds each day, your husband will keep looking forward to going home to you.
