How Much Would I Save If I Gave Up My Car?

If you are a two-car family, you may not be able to imagine giving up one of your cars. For some, it truly may be impossible. However, if you or your spouse commutes by train or works locally, it may be worth considering whether you could work some carpooling into your life rather than having one of your cars sit idle most of the day. In doing so, you could save big! Here are some of the costs you could reduce dramatically if you make the sacrifice, even if it’s just for a few months while you save up for a new vehicle.

Gas. Your gas costs depend largely on how old your car is and whether or not it’s a gas guzzler, but with the price of gas so high, having to fill up one less tank every week or two will add up quickly. If you have a 17-gallon tank that you fill up with regular gas in Massachusetts every two weeks, you’ll save almost $125 every month by giving up your car (that’s $1,600 a year)!

Insurance. Depending on where you live, what type of insurance you have, and what kind of car you own, your insurance costs could vary quite a bit, but it’s likely costing you a couple of hundred dollars a month. This could save you thousands of dollars over the course of a year!

Car Payment. If you make a payment for your vehicle each month, think about how nice it would be to take that bill out of your life! Getting rid of a lease or car payment could mean a savings of $200 – $500 each month. That’s a lot of money that you could be put to good use elsewhere!

Celebrating Christmas Holidays with More Fun and Less Stress

Social obligations and gift giving activities during the Christmas holidays can test the stress levels of people in terms of juggling daily responsibilities, holiday tasks, and budget management.  One of the effective ways to manage stress during the holidays is to plan social activities and finish shopping for gifts before the holiday rush starts.  Here are some steps that may be taken in order to reduce holiday stress.

1.       Create a list.  Make sure that you don’t miss out anybody special in your gift giving activities by having a Christmas gift list.  This can be categorized into family, friends, officemates, acquaintances and children.  You may list them down according to priority to make it easier for you to decide in case of budget dilemmas.  Some people create their gift lists as early as January so they can be ready to purchase any interesting gift item that comes their way while waiting for the holidays.
2.       Set a budget.  It’s easy to overspend on gift giving when you have extra money from bonuses.  Placing a limit to your holiday spending ensures that you don’t lose your shirt over the holidays.  This means allocating a fixed budget on gift giving, event hosting, and miscellaneous expenses.  Anticipating your gift requirements for the holidays can help you set the budget for gift shopping.  In case you find yourself running short of funds, look for discount coupons that allow you to stretch your budget just like the ones that you can find when you visit here.
3.       Plan your activities.  It’s difficult to accomplish all your tasks during the holidays if you cram everything during the season.  Start shopping for gifts early and try to make arrangements for your holiday events at least a month early. This way you can focus your energy in attending social activities and your daily tasks when the holidays officially begin.

The Christmas holiday is a celebration of love and sharing.  It’s meant to be enjoyed with the people we love and with those that need care.  Don’t let the holiday frenzy take the joy out of Christmas, plan and prepare early for a stress free season.

The Kitchen Work Triangle

Image: FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Blame it on my penchant for constant change, I am now toying with the idea of remodeling our kitchen.  This is the part of the house where I seem to spend most of my time, and I simply want it to look as pleasing as possible.  I wouldn’t mind getting some new stock cabinets in a nice wooden finish. More than aesthetics, of course the kitchen has to be functional.

I want our kitchen to have what they call the work triangle layout.  Here, the cooktop, sink and refrigerator are situated at a distance from one another, such that they form an imaginary triangle in the middle.  This makes for a more efficient work area, since all the things you need are in close proximity to one another- well, not too close, though!

Take the guesswork out of designing your kitchen, and try this triangle layout.  It will serve its purpose and help you become a more productive home worker.

Good Feng Shui Tip: Indoor Water Fountains

It’s almost a no-brainer that from the time we humans were conceived, we have been programmed to be soothed by water.  The nine months we spent inside our mother’s womb was a wet world of bliss.   It was comforting, and we didn’t have a single shred of worry in the world.

So it only makes sense that if we want to relax, we go back to that water-filled umbilical sac and lull ourselves to sleep.  But since we can’t go back in time, the next best thing would be to install indoor water fountains in our homes.

Other than the stress relief these fountains bring, they are popular in feng shui, as they bring forth the energy of water which symbolizes prosperity and wealth.

Another benefit of an indoor water fountain is it diffuses healthy negative ions into the air.  If you wish to top up the energy benefits, use crystals and stones or essential oils with your fountain.

Your indoor water fountain doesn’t necessarily have to look oriental if it clashes with the overall theme of your living space.  There are a lot of models out there which will match the style of your home.  Whatever type of water fountain you choose, you’ll still reap its benefits.

How to Eliminate Odors at Home

Every mom dreams of clean, pure air inside her home.  You wouldn’t want your little boy inhaling foul odors as he happily plays with his Duncan metal drifter yoyo in his bedroom, would you?  If you were one of the Incredibles, you’d probably turn the house inside out, and suck all the bad odors from it with ease.  Since that happens only in the movies, you’d do better to try out these tips instead:

Put vinegar in tiny containers, and put them in strategic places around the room.  Vinegar absorbs unpleasant smells.  You can also use charcoal to absorb odors, if you’re not too keen on vinegar.

Dust some baking soda on the carpets and furniture. It’s best to do this at night and then vacuum them off in the morning. Baking soda will do the job of absorbing some of the grease and leave a fresh odor in the room.

You can also mix 1 Tbs. baking soda, a teaspoon of lemon juice and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, and simply spray away when needed.

With these simple, and environment-friendly tips, you’ll be able to effectively shoo away odors from your home.

Why Choose Leather Furniture?

Who in his right mind wouldn’t want to sit in the lap of luxury?  Although your home may hardly qualify for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, you can still do something to pimp up your living room, to make it resemble that of royalty’s.  One way to do that is by choosing leather furniture.

Why should you choose leather?  Other than the prestige it projects, it is easy to maintain.  All you need is regular wiping with a damp cloth, and you’re good to go.  If you want added protection, you may use a stain protector.  And if you happen to need to repair leather couch snags, you can always get someone to do that for you.

Durability is another thing you can count on.  Leather is a popular material because of its durability.

Comfort is also something leather furniture boasts of.  Sofas made of leather follow the natural contours of your body, while retaining its shape.  Because it keeps its shape, its beauty lasts.

Leather furniture carries with it a certain air of elegance and style. Care for it as you would a fragile heart, and it will last you a lifetime.

Tips on Cleaning Laminate Floors

Wouldn’t it be utter bliss for you to know that your kids can safely roll around on the immaculately clean alloc flooring in your living room?  If your home surroundings were as clean and pure as the love you have for your family, then you wouldn’t worry a tad bit about uninvited germs finding their way into your kids’ bodies.  How do you keep your laminate floors spotless, anyway?

Use a soft brush attachment on the vacuum regularly.  Be sure to sweep or vacuum in the direction the floor is laid, so you can pick up all the dirt between the grooves instead of trapping in the flooring.

When washing, dilute a few quick squirts of mild liquid detergent and half a cup of vinegar in a pail of warm water.  Wring out the mop to keep the water from dripping.  Wipe the floor with the damp mop.

Caring for laminate flooring is much easier than cleaning real wood flooring.  With the above tips, you’ll find it a breeze to maintain the high gloss of your laminate floors.

Things You Need to Make Sure before Moving to Your New House

The key to your new home has finally been handed over to you, and you’re excited to start your new life there. Nevertheless, before you say goodbye to your old home, it’s crucial that you make a list of some of the things you need to take care of prior to your impending move. For instance, ask yourself if you have already arranged new utilities for your new home. You should also ask make sure that you have informed your bank, your mobile phone network provider, cable company, and any other companies who regularly bill you that you’re moving out and will forward a new address to them.

In addition, if you regularly contact a gardener, milk delivery service, a Maid Service Vienna VA, or other third party service, then you might have to cancel their services. Mail redirect is another important thing you need to take care of. As much as possible, try to discontinue utilities and inform tax or local authorities of the move so they can make adjustments to your bill and have these forwarded to your new home.

Finally, make sure that you’ve packed everything and that you haven’t left anything in the rooms. Make sure also that there’s nothing left in, underneath, behind, or on top of any furniture that you might be living behind. Once you’ve taken care of everything, you can move on to your new house peacefully knowing that you didn’t impose unnecessary hurdles on yourself.
