Throughout your child’s life, his or her pediatrician will be your best friend. Your child’s doc will virtually hold your hand as you make sure that your kid is always in the pink of health. The care you provide your little one is similar to electric blankets which keep him warm on a chilly winter night. If trips to your kid’s doctor sometimes leaves you frazzled, here are some tips for you to remember:

Prepare a list of questions well in advance. Once you’re in the pediatrician’s office, you wouldn’t want your occasional bouts of memory gap to take the better of you. Beforehand, make a note of what issues you may want to discuss with the doctor. This way, you wouldn’t have to bother him with a call back or a repeat appointment.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s your right to clarify things with the pediatrician, so don’t hesitate to engage him in a bit of a discussion over your kid’s health. If you keep things to yourself, you will never be reassured about your child’s condition. Ask him to explain things in layman’s terms.

If you can, ask someone to look after your other kids, so you don’t have the whole brady bunch making a circus out of the clinic.

Most importantly, be nice to the office staff. Whether you like it or not, they are the middlemen to your doctor. They will give you better service if you’re kind to them.

How to Get Your Kid to Drink More Water

When a child is at play, he’s seriously at work.  And when he’s at work, he doesn’t want to be disturbed- definitely not by his mom forcing him to drink a glass of water. 

We moms, of course, know that water is beneficial to our kids’ bodies, as water helps keep the body hydrated and moves nutrients around the body.  But when kids are busy fiddling with their e books, you can hardly do anything to make them go for a water break.  So, how can we get them to drink more water?

Try putting some lemon slices in a pitcher of water to give it a bit of a taste.  Keep it in the fridge, as kids may prefer drinking it cold. 

Use glasses or drinking bottles in their favorite cartoon character, so they will find the idea of drinking water more appealing.

You can try encouraging them to eat watermelons, or other fruits with high water content.

More importantly, you should set a good example and drink water yourself.  Stay away from soda.

 

Things to Think About Before Getting Married

Every little girl dreams of growing up to marry the man of her dreams.  Although not everyone will get the chance to have a dream wedding like Kate Middleton’s, one’s wedding is no less a memorable and special experience.  If you’re one who’s about to tie the knot, try to think about these health considerations before you get married:

Pap smears.  If you’ve never seen a gynecologist, now’s the perfect time to do that.  Get those yearly Pap smears and exams to make sure your body is in tiptop shape to get pregnant.  Sooner or later, you and your hubby will want a little bundle of joy.

Your period.  Nothing can be worse than having your period on your honeymoon.  If you find out that your period is due on your honeymoon, talk to your doctor about using contraceptives to help delay your menstruation.

Remember, your health is more important than your precious collection of Morgan silver dollars.  In order to successfully fulfill your wifely duties, you have to be in the pink of health.

Outdoor Fun With the Family

If you feel that your kids are spending way too much time online, spending hours scouring the web for the best youtube video downloader, then it’s time to get them on their feet and out the door.  Everyone does need a little sun on their cheeks, and a breath of fresh air rejuvenates the spirit.  If it seems extremely difficult to convince your kids to get out of the house, here’s what you can do:

Ride your bikes.  Drive off to a safe biking destination and bike with your family.  You’ll be burning calories and bonding with them at the same time.

Backyard fun.  If you don’t feel like going too far, you can have fun right in your own backyard.  Engage your son in a little backyard basketball or play catch with your little girl.

The possibilities are endless.  Test the limits of your imagination, and come up with things to do with your family outdoors.

 

 

How to Prevent Obesity in Children

Any loving mom puts a premium on her children’s health.  We want our kids to grow up active and healthy.  You want to beam with pride as you watch your son run around the school track and field.  It’s a hard fact though, that obesity can strike even young kids, so as a mom, you should do what you can to prevent your kids from packing on extra weight at their tender age.  Short of giving your kids appetite suppressants to keep their weight down, here are a few easy strategies to prevent obesity in kids:

  • As much as possible, don’t make your kid drink soda and too much juice.  These are just added calories without added nutrition.
  • Avoid fast food.  That’s easier said than done, I know.  Try to keep it at a minimum, if you can.  If your kids eat too much of these sodium-rich food, it’s not too healthy.
  • Make your kids physically active.  This may mean getting them enlisted in a sport or simply taking walks with them.
  • Got milk? Keep it to a minimum, though.  Yes, milk is good for the body, but over-consumption of this yummy drink can lead to kids being overweight.  Children normally need only 16-24 ounces of milk each day.

If you start your kids early with proper diet and exercise, they will carry this habit with them well into adulthood.  Health is the greatest gift you can give them.

 

 

Lazy Ways to Lose Weight

Women the world over are on the perennial quest to lose weight. Whether you simply want to look foxy in a tight black dress or you want to trim down to stay healthy, we all have our reasons for wanting to lose weight. What is Third-Hand Smoke?

Whenever I see some of my friends puffing away on their cigarettes, I just want to go ahead and pull it out of their lips and crush it on the floor. It just never ceases to baffle me why people enjoy smoking. It’s something I’ve never tried, and I don’t intend to. How to ease tired eyes

After a long day in front of the computer, I sometimes feel as if somebody has just used a laser barcode scanner to zap me straight in the eye.  My eyes get the most tired after long hours of work.

Even if you don’t plan to take a nap, it helps to put on a sleep mask, just to give your eyes a break from the light.  Five minutes should be enough.  You could also dampen a rag with cold water, fold it in half and put in on your closed eyes.  This helps perk up your eyes.
